Zakkushi On Main

Bukkake Soba. I was a bit disappointed when I took a bite. I was expecting it to have a hint of wasabi and the sauce to be more flavourful. This dish was quite bland, it only looks nice for photos.

No 1 Shanghai Cuisine

I went for lunch with my mom at the usual spot, No1 Shanghai Cuisine located in Richmond on No3 road. We tend to chose this place over any dim sum places because they serve a variety of authentic Shanghai food and the restaurant inside is very clean and also very bright from the large windows. The servers are very professional with their uniforms and they are also very nice.

Everytime we come here, we order their stir fry rice cakes but today I wasn’t feeling the rice cakes because I wasn’t that hungry so I suggested to share some appetizers.

We ordered ‘siu long bao‘ which is Shanghai soup pork dumplings. They have the word ‘soup’ in it because the dumping itself is filled with hot soup. There is a way to eat this, first you take a little bite on the edge, and then you drink the soup inside. They are kinda hard to pick up with just chopsticks so it’s also best to use a spoon. πŸ™‚

Next is the deep fried Chinese doughnut wrapped with sticky rice. The Chinese doughnut is what gives this wrap it’s flavours. It is quite filling.

Lastly, we ordered the spice sliced beef noodle soup to share as well. I love all kinds of noodle soups especially Shanghai beef noodle, mainly because of the soup. The soup is so flavourful with a hint of spice. The bowl includes sliced beef and tendon with a bit of ‘choy’ (veggies).

my lunch was deeeelicious! πŸ™‚

The Urban Tea Merchant

The Urban Tea Marchant reminds me of a wine tasting restaurant, but instead it’s for tea lovers so if you enjoy sipping hot tea, this place is for you! They serve afternoon tea sets, fondue sets, lunch, and of course, TEA!

our beautiful center piece

They had over 100 types of tea on their tea menu. If you are clueless about tea and don’t know what to choose, the tea menu actually includes a short description of the flavours of the tea. “bitter, bold, fruity, popped corn and rice, etc”.

Steve and I ordered their West Coast Afternoon Tea for $29 per person which comes with $5 tea, if you choose any tea that is over $5 then you just pay the difference.

The West Coast afternoon tea set starts off with two strawberry sobert with fresh strawberry slices and a mint leaf for garnishing, along with two champagne glasses of tea. It looked like champagne, but it was really just tea.

Our hot tea came out right after the sobert so we had something to sip on while waiting for our West Coast plate of sweets, fresh fruits, dipped strawberries, smoked salmon on bread, sun-dried tomatoes on bread, and more.

Overall experience was fantastic! The customer service was excellent and the restaurant itself was very relaxing. The bill came out to be $60 which isn’t so bad for the experience. Usually high tea restaurants range between $25-$50 per person depending where you go. High tea is definitely something we will continue going to.

we saved the fruits and sweets for last

The sun was out which made it even better, felt so much like Summer.
I give it 5 β™₯s!

Cafe D’lite

So one day, Dana asked if I have ever eaten “that chicken with the oil rice”. Normally, I would just play along and say “yeah, yeah” but I think I knew what she was talking about. So I tried to say it in cantonese and we agreed it was the same thing. Hainanese Chicken! Up until that point, I hadn’t eaten it since I was a wee lad. Within minutes we were out the door and on our way to the resturant. After GPS’ing the location, we found ourselves in Kitsilano. It was a smaller cafe, not as a flashy as some of the other cafes out there. We were here for the food though, so that didn’t matter at all. The service was very quick, we got our food almost right after we were finished ordering it. It was just like I remembered when I was little. The rice was just right and the chicken was cooked perfectly. It was sitting in soy sauce and you could dip it in the sweet and spicy sauce or the green onion oil. Needless to say I ate it in about 10 minutes. I was about to order another one for takeout, just in case I got hungry later in the night.

So, overall it was pretty good! the price is right, abot 8-10 bucks for each person. The location is a little far for us, but we found out that they have a location in Aberdeen Mall, which works out great because it’s about a 15 minute drive from Dana’s house. The food is exactly the same, although the person helping us had a little trouble understanding the difference between small and large.

Rose Tea ♥

Rose milk tea, my new ♥

I decided to be more adventurous this time and not go with the usual green milk tea/jasmine green tea/green tea. While looking through the menu, I came across rose milk tea and the first thought that popped into my head was my Rosewater hand lotion from Crabtree & Evelyn, which my coworker had mentioned how it reminded her so much of the rose flavoured gelato ice cream and how delicious it was. Out of curiosity, I ordered it and I didn’t regret it at all. I’m always iffy about ordering new bubble tea flavours because if it turns out bad then I’m stuck with it.
